RV Power Supplies

RV power supplies provide us with self sufficiency when caravanning. Over the past few years technology has provided us with many new products such as deep cycle storage batteries, solar panels and inverters. RV power supplies today come standard in a lot of caravans and are also available as optional extras.

Batteries for RV power supplies

RV power suppliesBattery technology for RV power supplies has improved dramatically over the past few years with the invention of deep cell and gel cell type batteries which lend themselves to frequent charging and discharging which are excellent for using as RV power supplies. With the addition of a decent quality inverter (covered later) and a couple of good quality batteries paralleled up you can now run a TV, a couple of lights and a couple of smaller 240v appliances for quite a few hours. These batteries can be set up to charge from your towing vehicle, a portable generator, battery charger during the day or solar panels .

I advise that you talk to a battery expert and discuss your specific needs and requirements for battery RV power supplies.

12 /240V Inverters for RV power supplies

Inverters come in two types pure or true sine wave and modified sine wave and form an integral part of RV power supplies.

Pure or true sine wave inverters produce an AC or alternating current that is very close that which is generated by power stations and distributed on the electricity network around our cities. Better quality components are required to produce this type of 240V supply, making pure sine wave inverters considerably more expensive than the modified sine wave type. Pure sine wave inverters are recommended for use with computers, laptops, printers, portable tool battery chargers, televisions and other sensitive electronic equipment. Pure sine wave inverters are at the top end of RV power supplies.

Modified sine wave inverters produce exactly what their name implies a modified sine wave. The AC supply produced by these type of inverters is very blocky and is only suitable for robust loads like lighting, 240v power tools, (some electronic controlled power tools do not like these inverters) cheap radios etc. Inverters come in 12 or 24 volt models and they range from 100 watts up to 3000 watts and higher. Once again I suggest that you talk to the experts about your requirements as an inverter can be a major investment when setting up your RV power supplies.

Solar Panels as RV power supplies
RV power supplies
Solar panels come in various shapes and sizes. They are available in models that are portable or can be permanently fixed to the roof of your caravan.Solar panel systems can be set up with your battery / inverter arrangement and can provide an excellent source of charging for your RV power supplies during daylight hours
.

Again due to the substantial investment I suggest you talk to the experts about your requirements for RV power supplies.
