RV Generators
RV Generators have improved dramatically over the past few years and costs of the units have also dropped to a level affordable to most caravanners. RV Generators come in a few different types for different applications.
Firstly there are the heavy duty generators which are usually powered by four stroke engines available in various sizes from 1.5 kVA up to 10 kVA units. These units do an excellent job and will run all day; however they are noisy and disturb the peace and your neighbours. They are also bulky, heavy, difficult to store and transport. These units generally produce what they call dirty power and are not suitable for electronic equipment.
The next type are the smaller domestic RV generators which are usually powered by a 2 stroke engine and range in size from 750 watts to about 1800 watts. These units are a lot quieter than the units mentioned above but have limited applications. They will provide enough power to run a few lights or a small portable fridge.
The latest types of RV generators to hit the market are what is known as an inverter style generators. These units generate a DC voltage usually 12volts and then use a pure sine wave inverter to produce a clean 240 volt supply suitable for running battery chargers, computers, laptops, printers, LCD televisions and other sensitive electronic equipment. These RV generators are housed in a compact plastic enclosure and are whisper quiet when running. They range in size from 1000 watts up to around 2800 watts. These units are expensive but for the serious camper they are a worthwhile investment.
A word on safety, it is good practice to have small earth stakes attached to your RV generators via an earth cable which is driven into the ground adjacent to the RV generators when in use. If unearthed RV generators become faulty it is possible for the metallic frame of the unit to become alive and become a potentially fatal hazard. It is also good practice to have RCD protection on your RV generators or at least use a portable RCD box plugged into your RV generators.
