Caravanning Handy Hints

Carry a couple of packets of different sized cable (zip) ties with you, they are strong and you will be surprised what you can use them for. A little trick is most of them are re-usable you can actually insert another tie into the buckle and release the locking mechanism and undo the tie.

If you have a rollout awning on your caravan use a couple of cable ties to secure your awning, this will prevent the awning from accidentally unrolling while you are on the road.

Cross over your safety chains where they attach to your towing vehicle, they will act as a cradle if your caravan happened to jump off your tow ball. This is a legal requirement in some parts of Australia.

Do you find every time you go to use your caravan there is usually a problem with the tail lights or indicator lights and you have to make last minute repairs. It is usually only a bit of corrosion or a blown globe. Consider replacing the lights on the rear of your caravan with LED units, these lights are sealed and give you hundreds of hours of trouble free operation.

Here are a few things I suggest you put in your bits and pieces box.
Spare plug for your caravan sink
Spare 240V and 12V light globes
Spare tap connection for your hose
Spare D shackles, they tend to go missing.

Consider purchasing a shaker torch, these units do not need batteries, usually have LED lamps and are an excellent source of emergency light. Just a few shakes and you have light. These torches can usually be purchased from electronics stores. These torches are reasonably small and will usually fit in the glove box of your towing vehicle.
