RV Breakaway Detection System
An excellent piece of towing equipment is a Breakaway Systems, these have been designed to activate the electric brake system and brake lights on the RV in the event of an accidental separation from the RV towing vehicle. The system will apply the electric brakes and the brake lights of the RV and will keep them applied for around 20 minutes, enabling you to secure your trailer when it has come to a stop. The Breakaway systems usually have their own power supply which charges via the RV towing vehicle, or it can be charged with a battery charger.
Caravan Electric Brake Controllers
Most Modern RV's are fitted with electric brakes on the wheels as apposed to the old overrider braking system used on older RV's. Another essential piece of RV towing equipment is the electric brake controller which is fitted to the RV towing vehicle within reach of the driver. The controller is set up for automatic operations but most have a manual override for emergency and tricky situations. There are predominantly two types of electrical brake controllers, the first and more traditional being the pendulum type which need to be mounted in a specific plane within the RV towing vehicle for them to function correctly. The second type is the new solid state electronic units which can basically be mounted anywhere in reach of the vehicle driver. Most RV towing vehicles have two different RV towing capacities, with and without electric brake controllers.

Most RV's are wider than their respective RV towing vehicles therefore extra mirrors are required to provide adequate rear view. There are several types of RV towing mirrors available from the simple mirrors that strap onto your existing mirrors, semi permanent mirrors that clamp onto the mudguards and doors of the towing vehicle and mirrors that can be permanently bolted to the doors of the RV towing vehicle. They all have there specific applications depending on the width of RV, length of trip and portability required.
